Editorial Policy

This policy explains the standards applied to journalism published by This Hour. It should be read alongside our Sources Policy, Corrections Policy and AI & Automation Policy.

Our purpose

This Hour reports and explains developments across world affairs, technology, artificial intelligence, software development, cryptocurrency, finance, business, science and health.

Our first obligation is to the reader. Editorial decisions are guided by relevance, public interest, evidence and usefulness—not by the desire to publish the greatest possible number of pages.

Accuracy

We take reasonable steps to verify material facts before publication. The level of verification increases with the seriousness of the claim and the potential harm caused by an error.

Where possible, we:

– consult original documents, official statements, filings, datasets or research papers;

– corroborate important claims with more than one reliable source;

– identify dates, jurisdictions, currencies and time zones clearly;

– distinguish confirmed facts from estimates, allegations and opinion;

– state what remains unknown in a developing story;

– link to the evidence used to prepare the article.

Speed does not excuse fabrication or careless certainty. A report may be delayed, shortened or withheld when the available evidence is not strong enough.

Developing stories

Early reporting is often incomplete. Articles about developing events may change as new information becomes available. We show publication and update times and, where appropriate, include an update note explaining a material change.

We do not treat repetition as confirmation. Ten websites citing the same unverified post still amount to one original claim.

Headlines and presentation

Headlines should reflect the substance of the article. They may be direct or engaging, but they must not create a materially false impression, omit a decisive qualification or promise information the article does not provide.

Images, captions, charts, summaries and social posts are held to the same standard. Illustrative or AI-generated images should not be presented as documentary photographs of real events.

Reporting, analysis, opinion and sponsored material

We distinguish among:

– **News:** reporting centered on verified events and evidence.

– **Analysis:** interpretation based on disclosed facts, data and context.

– **Opinion:** a clearly identified viewpoint.

– **Sponsored content:** material produced in a commercial relationship and labeled prominently.

Advertising and sponsorship do not grant a sponsor control over unrelated editorial coverage. Payment for coverage, placement or links must be disclosed. We do not sell undisclosed favorable treatment or disguised search-engine links.

Attribution and originality

Facts may be reported by many publications; another publisher’s wording, photography and original creative work remain theirs. We attribute reporting that we have not independently established and link to the original source where practical.

This Hour does not publish lightly altered copies of other articles. Our work must add value through verification, synthesis, explanation, context, data or continued updates.

Sources

Source selection depends on the subject. Primary sources are preferred for decisive factual claims, but official status alone does not make a statement complete or impartial. Independent reporting and expert evidence may be needed to test or contextualize an official account.

Anonymous sourcing is used sparingly. If we cannot explain why a source is credible and why anonymity is justified, we should not rely on that source for a consequential claim.

Conflicts of interest

Editorial decisions should not be influenced by personal holdings, gifts, referral commissions or commercial relationships. A relevant material conflict should be disclosed to readers.

Writers and reviewers must not use unpublished editorial information for trading or personal advantage. Coverage of an asset, company or product does not constitute an endorsement.

Finance and cryptocurrency

Financial and cryptocurrency coverage is informational. We distinguish market data from commentary and label rapidly changing figures with a source and timestamp where relevant.

We do not promise returns, present speculation as certainty or provide personalized instructions to buy, sell or hold an asset. Promotional claims receive particular scrutiny. Readers should consult the Finance Disclaimer before making financial decisions.

Health and science

Health reporting can affect real decisions and requires particular care. We distinguish peer-reviewed research from preprints, laboratory work from human studies, correlation from causation and early evidence from established medical guidance.

We do not provide individual diagnoses, dosages or treatment plans. A press release is not treated as a substitute for the underlying study. Material health claims should be checked against authoritative guidance and the quality and limitations of the evidence. Readers should consult the Health Disclaimer for further information.

Harm, privacy and dignity

Public interest is not the same as public curiosity. We consider the likely harm of publishing private details, graphic material or identifying information. We exercise additional care when reporting on children, victims, medical conditions, bereavement and people who may be at risk.

Artificial intelligence and automation

Automation may assist with discovery, source comparison, transcription, translation, drafting, formatting, tagging and updates. It may not invent evidence or remove accountability for the final publication.

We do not attribute automated work to fictional people. Our use of these systems is described in the AI & Automation Policy.

Corrections

When we make a material error, we correct it and explain the change. We do not quietly rewrite a substantive mistake in a way that hides what happened. Minor spelling, formatting and style changes may be made without a correction note when they do not alter meaning.
